Socio-Historical Development of the Kampung Cina Settlement in Kuala Terengganu offers an insight into one of the most enduring Chinese settlements on the East Coast of the Malay peninsula. A lot has been written about the towns and cities on the West Coast, particularly Malacca and George Town/Penang. Little has been done to appreciate the history of the settlements on the East Coast, so this book is significant in offering us an understanding of the early Chinese settlement that existed there.
Although European traders only began recording the existence of a Chinese settlement in Kuala Terengganu in the early 18th century, there is reason to believe that the settlement dates back to much earlier. I have walked and explored the Chinese Settlement of Kuala Terengganu, as I have other settlements on West Malaysia, and have tried to picture how it was like a century or two ago.

I have been particularly fascinated to learn about settlements outside of the usual Malacca/Penang orbit, as they help us better appreciate the history of the Chinese people in the country. The authors, Dr Tan and Dr Kamarudin, are research fellows attached to the Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang.
The research carried out, as encapsulated in this slim but significant volume, helps me explore the relationship between early Chinese settlers who became the forefathers of those who gave us Penang Hokkien, and those speaking various other forms of Hokkien the northern and northeastern parts of the Malay peninsula.
