The Origin of Chinese Kongsi is a book by Wang Tai Peng based on his research into this subject. The author is a full-time journalist. He began researching on this subject in the 1970s, and first published his paper in the
Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society.
The origin of Chinese kongsis is indeed a complex subject. Wang delved into the many important documents on this matter, such as Gustaat Schlegel's 1866 article on the Heaven & Earth Society. He looked at the history of Chinese immigration into Southeast Asia and how the kongsis emerged in the 18th century.
